| Arthritis Prevention Among ACL Patients |
|
It has become increasingly common for young athletes to dedicate themselves solely to one sport, which increases the risk of sport-specific injuries. One injury that has been occurring with a great deal more frequency, among young athletes in particular, is an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.
What is troubling about this injury to ligaments of the knee is that nearly 70% of ACL injuries in young athletes lead to early-onset arthritis, a degenerative arthritis that causes breakdown of cartilage in the joints. With this in mind, the physical therapist may want to alter the rehabilitation program of ACL patients, limiting certain activities after injury, or changing the length of time that patients must wait before they resume playing sports.
