| Get Off Your High Heels |
|
If you are a woman with osteoarthritis of the knee, you will hardly be surprised to learn that two-thirds of people with knee osteoarthritis are women.
In the view of many, women's widespread experience of this degenerative form of arthritis is partially due to wearing high heels. Research shows that high heels place abnormal stress on both the front and back of the knee. And stiletto heels are not the only culprits. Even modest one-and-a-half inch heels increase pressure (or torque) in two areas commonly damaged by osteoarthritis - the joint beneath the undersurface of the kneecap (the patellofemoral compartment) and the joint surfaces on the inner side of the knee (the medial compartment). Switch to low heels to avoid knee damage.
